You rush through your oral hygiene routine, skipping a few steps to save some time. Sound familiar? We’ve all been there at some point in our lives. Unfortunately, letting certain habits fall through the cracks can have detrimental effects on your smile. So, no matter how lazy or rushed you’re feeling, here are a few oral hygiene practices you should never skip.

Regularly Replacing Your Toothbrush

Over time, the bristles on your beloved toothbrush will become worn-down, splayed, and damaged with consistent use. At this point, they won’t be as capable of cleaning your teeth, gum line, and hard-to-reach areas effectively. Replacing your toothbrush as recommended (every three to four months or as soon as the bristles are damaged) is critical to your oral health. It ensures you’re getting the most out of your brushing sessions and prevents you from getting sick.

Cleaning Your Toothbrush

Always run hot water over the head of your toothbrush before and after brushing your teeth! It helps eliminate bacteria that may have collected in the hours between uses and new bacteria after brushing. Keep in mind that for proper sanitization, the water should be hot enough to produce steam. If that technique is not cutting it for you, try soaking your toothbrush in an antibacterial mouthwash!

Using the Right Equipment

The equipment you use can make have a significant impact on your oral health. When you’re shopping for your oral hygiene essentials, make sure you always pick up fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush that fits your mouth comfortably. Fluoride protects your teeth from cavity-causing bacteria and harmful acids. It can also help minimize tooth sensitivity and brighten your smile! And if possible, opt for an electric or battery-operated toothbrush. Studies show they’re more effective at reducing plaque and gingivitis than manual brushing.

Scraping Your Tongue

Do you regularly clean your tongue? Most people neglect or forget about this step, but it’s essential to maintain good oral health and hygiene. Food particles can get trapped in the tiny bumps and crevices on your tongue, attracting bacteria that can accumulate and lead to bad breath, tooth decay, and even gum disease. So, every time you brush your teeth, don’t forget to gently brush your tongue as well to keep it clean and healthy.

Did you forget about these crucial oral hygiene practices? That’s alright – it’s never too late to start improving your oral health! Try to incorporate these habits into your routine to keep your mouth in optimal condition.

About the Author

Dr. Girish Sandadi earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.
