Whether you are heading to a relative’s place or
just keeping festive at home this year, there are all sorts of fun holiday
foods and activities to look forward to. Be sure to continue
brushing twice and flossing at least once every single day. Another great step is
using a mouthwash to rinse away food particles left in your mouth. If you are
traveling, don’t forget to pack your toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss along
from the journey.

Drink Water

It is important that you stay hydrated during this time. As
much as you’d like to have a can of soda or a glass of wine, these beverages
can be harmful for your oral health. If you are itching for something fizzing,
have a sparkling water. If you’re wanting to wind down with an adult beverage,
choose something less acidic and sugary, like a gin and tonic.

Cut Down on Sugar

It’s okay to have a treat or two now and again, but many of
us are known to overindulge during the holiday season. Afterall, there seems to
be sweets all around us. Eggnog, candy canes, and gingerbread are quite
tempting. Be sure to limit the number of sugary treats you are having. If you are
craving something sweet, try having some fresh fruit or sugar-free gum instead.
When you do have something sugary, clean your mouth thoroughly afterwards.

Make Healthy Choices

Fortunately, not all holiday foods are harmful for your
smile. Many of them have all sorts of nutrients that your body will benefit from.
Save a large portion of your plate for turkey, which contains phosphorus and
protein, and vegetables. Broccoli and carrots are high in vitamin A. You could
even start out your meal with a cheese board. Dairy products are high in
calcium, which is necessary to keep your teeth and bones strong. If you want a
salty snack, have some salted nuts.

Don’t Use Your Teeth as Tools

Don’t be using your teeth to pop bottles or open stubborn
packaging. You could easily end up with a cracked or chipped tooth. Instead,
try to find the proper tool or ask someone else for help in order to get the job
done.

You don’t want to be spending extra time in the dental chair
this holiday season. Be sure that you are up to date with your regular checkups,
and keep the tips above in mind. This way, you can start the new year with
excellent oral health!

About the Author

Dr. Girish
Sandadi earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Michigan
at Ann Harbor and enjoys regularly taking continuing education courses to keep
his knowledge and skills sharp.
