Did you know that 80% of Americans are unsatisfied with their smiles? If you’re part of that statistic, New Year’s resolutions are an excellent way to perfect your pearly whites. By taking better care of your teeth, you’ll have the confidence it takes to be the life of the party. To help you get started, read on for four ideas for resolutions that will help you end the year with a healthy smile.

#1: Visit the Dentist

If you’re someone who avoids going to the dentist until an issue arises, now is the time to change your ways! Visiting the dentist every six months is key to keeping your smile looking its best. During your visits, your dental hygienist will thoroughly clean your teeth and around your gum line. Once they’re done, your dentist will do an exam of the oral cavity. If they identify any issues, they’ll work with you to come up with a treatment plan.

#2: Brush and Floss Better

Brush your teeth once before you eat breakfast in the morning and once after your last meal of the day. Do it for two minutes both times and use a soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste that contains fluoride. Additionally, floss between your pearly whites at least once per day, preferably before you go to bed. This will get rid of any food that’s gotten stuck there and remove plaque that can’t be reached with a toothbrush.

#3: Eat A Dentist-Approved Diet

Do you eat a lot of sweets like candy, cookies, and cake? If so, make a point of cutting back on these sugary treats in the new year to improve your oral health and lessen your chances of developing cavities. Instead, eat more dentist-approved foods, including:

  • Fresh, crisp fruits and vegetables like carrots, pears, apples, broccoli, strawberries, and celery
  • Low-fat or fat-free dairy products like cheese, milk, and plain yogurt
  • Lean meats like turkey, chicken, beef, and pork
  • Leafy greens like lettuce and spinach
  • Fish like salmon and sardines

#4: Whiten Your Smile

Coffee, red wine, tea, and dark sodas like cola and root beer can leave unsightly stains on your teeth. This can make your smile look duller than it once did. Cut back on these beverages or drink them through a straw so they don’t have as much contact with your teeth. You can also ask your dentist what teeth whitening options they have available to get rid of existing stains.

Regardless of if you pick all these ideas to gain a healthy smile or just one, the results are sure to stun. By the time the next round of New Year’s Eve parties comes around, your smile will be a topic of conversation for all the right reasons!
