Choosing the right tooth replacement option can be difficult. You want something that is long lasting, functional, and blends in with the rest of your smile. Dental implants are a preferred choice of both dental professionals and patients alike, but are they right for you? Read on to learn about five important characteristics that could determine if you are a good dental implant candidate.

Excellent Oral Hygiene

The success of your dental implants relies on how well you take care of them. Implants require similar maintenance as your normal teeth do. This includes brushing twice and flossing once daily.  Using a mouth rinse is also a great step to reduce bacteria in the mouth that could compromise surrounding teeth and gum tissue.

Healthy Gums

Dental implants are even more vulnerable to gum inflammation than your natural teeth are. If you develop an infection of your gum tissue, also known as periodontal disease, then the gum can detach from the implant and create pockets. When harmful bacteria build up, they can attack the bone that’s supporting your implants causing them to fail.

Sufficient Jawbone

In order to be successful, implants need to be anchored and fuse to the jawbone. When you’re missing teeth, overtime your jawbone will begin to deteriorate. In this case, the jawbone is unlikely to support a healthy implant.

No Chronic Disease

Dental implants are best suited for patient who have good overall health. Chronic diseases, like diabetes, interfere with the process of fusion between the implant and jawbone as well as slowing healing and increasing the probability of developing periodontal disease. Conditions like heart disease and sleep apnea can interfere with the anesthesia during the procedure which can ultimately lead to complications. All of your chronic health problems should be addressed while considering dental implants as a tooth replacement option.

Good Lifestyle Habits

Patients who have riskier lifestyle habits, like smoking tobacco products, excessively drinking alcohol, and other drug use are not good candidates for dental implants. Drinking alcohol can interfere with the healing process by causing dry mouth and inhibiting the clotting of blood. Over time, it can also lead to bone loss making it much more difficult to place implants. Smoking increases your risk of gum disease and slows the healing process which can increase your chance of complications. Both of these habits are destructive, especially for someone who is getting dental implants.

If you have all of these qualities, chances are that you’re a good candidate for dental implants in Highland Park! You will be reaping the benefits of your new smile in no time!
